About North Georgia College & State University

North Georgia College & State University, or NGCSU for short, is a four-year public university located in Dahlonega, which is the county seat of Lumpkin County, situated in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 3700 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. In the 1800's, Dahlonega was the site of the first major gold rush in USA, Today, The Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site, sitting in the middle of the town square, being housed in the old Lumpkin County Courthouse, which was built in 1836.

NGCSU was founded in 1873, as an agricultural branch of the University of Georgia, its founding being made possible by the Morrill Act and the efforts of William Pierce Price. In 1929, the institution became known as North Georgia College, which received the designation of state university in 1996.

First starting with an enrollment of only 3 young men and a young woman, the university has today an enrollment estimated at a number of approximately 5 500 students, most of which are undergraduates, offering various educational programs in numerous fields of study, through 4 colleges, which are: Mike Cottrell School of Business, School of Education, School of Arts & Letters and School of Natural & Health Sciences.

Athletics

The athletic teams from North Georgia College & State University are known as the Saints and Lady Saints, who compete in NCAA Division II within the Peach Belt Conference, since 2005, in various sports, including in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis and cross-country. The teams have experienced victory in many of the sports in which they compete, over the years, including in softball, in which the Lady Saints finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 50-5, and rode a 27 game win streak and a #1 ranking for a large part of the season and into the Division II World Series.

Did you know?

Freshman Cadets are not allowed to use the stairs located just outside of the Dining Hall, and must instead walk around on the sidewalk and road to get to the Dining Hall.

Another tradition at NGCSU is that students do not enter the area of the Memorial Wall, unless they are stopping to show honor to those listed on the wall. The Wall is located in front of Memorial Hall, and it was built in 1983 to honor students and alumni who died either in service to their country or while attending NGCSU.
